Signs of Winter

Watching you, helpless,
I let my frigid wind
blow through my eyes

and the cold cold ground
bite my naked toes
and wonder if the white sheet

covering your face protects it
from the wintry night.
For tonight is the first sign

that winter is fast approaching
even though the leaves
have not yet turned to gold

or fallen from the trees
and November is still
three weeks away.
